How to add some spice!
If you’re just wanting to add some heat to a recipe you already love, here are my favorite ways:
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes: If you’re looking to add a little heat to a recipe without changing the flavor too much, try adding some crushed red pepper flakes.
- Cayenne pepper: Cayenne pepper is another fairly neutral way to add heat to a meal. Be careful though, a little goes a long way.
- Hot sauce: This is a great way to douse on some heat. There are SO many delicious hot sauces out there. Local farmer’s markets are often great places to snag a fun and interesting hot sauce. In my pantry we usually keep at least a cayenne hot sauce, a green hot sauce, and an ancho chili hot sauce.
- Ancho chile powder is one of my favorite spices to add heat to a recipe. It’s rich and smoky, with a unique flavor. I use it in my vegetarian chili, queso flameado, and even my Nashville Hot Tofu recipe.
- Sriracha: I separate this one out from other hot sauces because it has such a unique flavor profile. It’s great on eggs, tacos, and for spicing up take-out. I also use it in my peanut sauce to get a lot of flavor with less ingredients.
- Hot peppers: This is probably the most common way to add some spice to a recipe. Jalapenos, serranos, and habaneros are great options.
- Chutneys: If you’re not a huge fan of spicy but you love a good flavor, a chutney is a great way to add a little flavor without a lot of heat. I love chutneys on sandwiches and cheese boards.
